Pinewood Derby Rules

The Pinewood Derby is one of Scouting’s signature events, combining engineering, creativity, sportsmanship, and, most importantly, a sense of accomplishment. Scouts and their parents work together to build a gravity-powered miniature race car from an official Pinewood Derby kit for our annual race, typically held in March. The Pack provides each Scout with a kit containing a block of wood, plastic wheels, and axles, giving every participant the same starting point while encouraging creativity, learning, and participation.

The Pinewood Derby is intended to be a family activity, with parents and Scouts working together to design, build, and decorate their car. Along the way, Scouts learn valuable skills such as planning, problem-solving, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. It is always one of the most anticipated and exciting events of the year.

Trophies are awarded to the first, second, and third place finishers in each rank level (Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos). Arrow of Light Scouts typically cross over to their Troop before the Derby and therefore do not compete. In addition, a variety of special awards are presented for categories such as Best Paint Job, Most Colorful, Most Original, Spirit of Scouting, Most Patriotic, and others. These awards are typically reserved for Scouts who do not place among the top three finishers in their rank, ensuring that every Scout has an opportunity to be recognized for their hard work and creativity. The specific award categories are announced several weeks before the Derby.

Top finishers advance to the District Pinewood Derby and may earn the opportunity to compete at the Council Pinewood Derby. Whether a Scout is racing for a trophy or simply enjoying the experience of building and competing, the Pinewood Derby creates lasting memories and a strong sense of pride and accomplishment

Below are the official Pinewood Derby rules used by Pack 66. These are the current Monmouth Council Pinewood Derby rules, which Pack 66 adopts in their entirety. Using the same rules helps ensure fair competition and prepares qualifying Scouts for advancement to the District and Council Pinewood Derby races. All specifications must be met at check-in. The Pack’s official scale will serve as the final determination of a car’s weight. Any questions regarding rule interpretation or eligibility will be decided by the Committee Chair or their designated representative.
